1980s Latina fashion had different styles. In the 80s, women wore strange hair, big accessories, bright makeup, and lots of flowy dresses with bright colors. Latinas wore their hair poofy, teased, or in big curls. They had a hairspray called Aquanet and it’s a strong hold for any weather. This trend was especially popular with cholas. A chola by definition, is a woman of Mexican-American culture.

Cholas would wear styles that related to gang culture or other things like wearing their brothers flannel shirts and workwear labels. The style of chola was heavily influenced by hip hop. Cholas were always struggling to find their identity, they would end up in gangs or have gang boyfriends, they’d have a bad reputation at school, they’d get into a lot of trouble like drinking, drugs, or getting pregnant very young. Most of these women came from very broken homes. Sometimes families were very poor, part of a gang, addicted to drugs or alcohol, or very abusive. Being a chola made them look tough and ready for anything coming their way.

People that used to set the trend in Latin America were the stars of telenovelas. A telenovela is a Spanish soap opera. An example of a telenovela star back then was Lucia Mendez. Their accessories contained hoops, rings, long nails, belts, headbands, bracelets, and pearl necklaces(for the rich people). They wore a variety of vibrant makeup including dark eyebrows, big colorful bright eyeshadow, fake eyelashes, lined lipstick, and very bright pink blush.
